Welcome to Physical Education:

Our goal for the first week of school is to assign lockers, gym rules, and procedures.

Let's have an active and healthy JOURNEY in Physical Education.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

4.8 Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) is designed to create awareness of a healthy body and the importance of physical development to maintain a healthy body. As such, students are not graded on athletic ability but on participation and responsibility to the class. PE classes are graded and affect honor roll.

4.8.1 PE Rules

The rules for PE are intended to establish an orderly and safe environment in which to engage in physical activity. They are as follow:

a. All students must report to PE class dressed in proper UDS PE uniform (see guidelines for elementary school and for middle school in section 10 on page 50-52). This is important to be able to complete the needed physical activities. Classes take place both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor activities will be moved inside if it is actively raining at class time.

b. All students must immediately assemble on their assigned spot when reporting to PE classes for attendance.

c. All students must participate in all activities in the PE class period such as, but not limited to, warm up exercises, skill development activities, and sports/games to the best of their ability.

d. All students will dress out and report to PE class even if excused from participating in physical activities. The objectives taught each day build on previous skills and are necessary for future skills.

e. On special ―dress out of uniform‖ days students out of uniform do not have to wear their PE uniform either; all those in uniform must wear PE uniform.

4.8.2 PE Procedures

Since participation and responsibility are the basis for the grade and not mastery of skill or content on a daily basis, the grading system differs from other subjects.

4.8.2.1 PE Content Grade

All students receive the highest mark of either 100 (grades 1-8) or E (Kinder) if they adhere to the stated PE rules:

a. Dress in proper UDS PE uniform.

b. Be on time.

c. Full participation in the activity of the day.

d. If not 3 points (1-8) or equivalent (kinder) will be deducted from the grade for each offense recorded from the list above. Kinder-after 3rd offense grade is lowered to next letter grade.

When students do not report to PE because of suspension from school for a disciplinary action (refer to Student Behavior in section 9), the grade will be reduced by the equivalent of one (1) letter grade.

4.8.2.2 PE Conduct Grade

All students receive the highest mark of either an A (grades 1-8) or E (Kinder) if they follow class conduct rules, such as: follow directions, play by the rules, and be respectful to both the coach and each other. If the conduct rules are not followed, 3 points (grades 1-8) or equivalent points (kinder) will be deducted from the grade for each offense recorded.

For any major offense, the grade will be reduced by the equivalent of one (1) letter grade.

4.8.2.3 PE Parent Notification

Parents will be notified of any deductions to either content or conduct grades that will cause the grade to fall to the next letter or equivalent grade, so they will have an opportunity to counsel with their child before the final grading period. Progress reports will also be sent as per regular grading procedures. Upon written request additional notices will be provided for each offense (deduction).

4.8.2.4 PE Excused from Participation Guidelines

In order to be excused from PE, a written notice is required from a doctor or parent. A doctor’s note is required for a period of 3 or more consecutive days; however, a parent notice is acceptable for less than 3 days. Written notice must be given to the PE coach before school or at the beginning of class.

Students excused from PE for a medical reason, will not be allowed to participate in recess activities or other physical activity such as cheerleading, dance, athletic practice or games.
